‘Memorials of New York City: Over 200 Years of Honoring the Fallen’ Webinar

While public art plays a significant role in our cities as a representation of our values, history, and civilization, none are as important as memorials. Whether they’re imposing sculptures or easy-to-miss markers, each of them demands our respect as they represent the tragic loss of our fallen. It’s time to virtually journey around New York and learn about the structures erected to honor our deceased, especially our veterans.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore a myriad of different memorials throughout New York City and the impactful stories that they convey.

Led by Sylvia Laudien-Meo — art historian, museum educator, and NYC tour guide — our virtual visit to the memorials around the five boroughs will include:

  • The role memorials play in our city, from places of mourning and reflecting to those meant to inspire and bring hope
  • A look at the huge variety of memorials that exist throughout NYC between the American Revolution to the present day, including flagpoles, urns, triumphant arches, Dough Boys, eternal flames, and many others
  • A discussion around the different styles and materials artists chose to design memorials, and the ways they are encouraging visitors to engage with the memory of those we mourn and honor
  • Memorials that are yet to be realized, such as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Memorial

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Sylvia — any and all questions about memorials in NYC are welcomed and encouraged!
