Pratt Institute’s Virtual Research Open House

More than 200 Pratt faculty, staff, students, and external collaborators will host 60 online presentations, demonstrations, and talks about one of a kind research projects tackling major issues, from the youth immigrant experience to community civic engagement. The third annual Open House will highlight Pratt’s unique approach to research, featuring nontraditional and performance based interdisciplinary projects. The presentation of projects, normally hosted on Pratt’s campus, will be held digitally this year. 

Faculty and staff volunteers, as well as students from Pratt’s Foundation program – a community experience which brings together first year art and design majors to develop creative skills and build relationships together – will be serving as judges for Open House projects. Research winners will be selected in four categories: Impact, Innovation, Sustainability, and Start Up Power, and will receive a cash prize in recognition. The public will also be invited to vote and select a People’s Choice Award.

Previous winners include: 

  • Grassroots Cactivism: promotes use of the Nopales cactus as a sustainable crop for food and packaging
  • Ariane Lourie Harrison’s Pollinators Pavilion: an architectural space that doubles as a visitor center and home for bees vital to pollination
  • Ami Cai’s Song Searching, a STEAMplant project, uses gaming technology to encourage players to navigate through ocean noise pollution as a humpback whale
