Walking Tour // Sound and the City: Artists Max Neuhaus and Janet Cardiff
Sound travels. In this afternoon Olio we too will journey, rediscovering two iconic New York City locations—Times Square and Central Park—by experiencing Max Neuhaus’ sound installation Times Square (1977-1992; 2002-ongoing), and Janet Cardiff’s guided audio-walk, Her Long Black Hair (2005). A hidden gem, Max Neuhaus’ droning installation oozes from beneath the subway grates on the triangular pedestrian island between 45th and 46th streets. In Her Long Black Hair, Janet Cardiff directs a 35-minute surreal psychological and physical odyssey through the park. We will explore how these two artists harness the permeating and penetrating nature of sound to intermingle with their chosen sites, ultimately altering our perceptions of place.
