About Black Wave:
“I worship at the altar of this book.” —MAGGIE NELSON, The Argonauts
“Michelle Tea’s most fearless book. It shook me up.” —EILEEN MYLES, I Must Be Living Twice
Michelle Tea started out writing a memoir, looking to make sense of a long relationship and its tumultuous end. But as the weird obligations of truth-telling began to pile up, she allowed herself to write about her situation in the third person, and the work exploded into the formally innovative and apocalyptic fantasy Black Wave.
The year is 1999. Desperate to quell her addiction to drugs, disastrous romance, and a San Francisco in the throes of the first tech bubble, Michelle heads to LA. As a global apocalypse approaches, she begins an exploration of how to make queer love and art without succumbing to self-destructive vice. Dreamlike and dystopian, hopeful and redemptive, Black Wave asks the question: what happens if you are all you have left?
