This special one-day iEngage Conference will address the role of religion and the opportunity for civic engagement in an age of extremism. The morning will feature a keynote by Rabbi Dr. Donniel Hartman addressing one of modern life’s most urgent and vexing questions: Why are the great monotheistic faiths—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—chronically unable to fulfill their own self-professed goal of creating individuals infused with moral sensitivity and societies governed by the highest ethical standards?
Breakout sessions in the morning and afternoon will be taught by Shalom Hartman Institute scholars and other communal thought leaders. The afternoon will include a panel discussion with Dr. Yehuda Kurtzer along with Christian and Muslim leaders discussing the challenges each religious community faces in an age of extremism, what each needs to hear from the other, and the role of religion in cultivating civic responsibility. We will conclude with a commemoration of 9/11.
