Murder and Mercy

Bangladeshi immigrant Rais Bhuiyan was nearly killed in 2001 by Mark Stroman, a self-avowed American terrorist seeking revenge for the 9/11 attacks. Ten years later, Bhuiyan waged a campaign against the state of Texas to have his attacker spared from the death penalty. Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara and author Anand Giridharadas, who reported this story in his book “The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas” look back on this saga and explore the larger themes of cultural resentment, hate and mercy in post-9/11 America.
