Coming off of the raucous 2016 presidential election and its fitful aftermath, the nation is faced with challenges on a grand scale. The behemoth battles in Washington, and the media circus surrounding them, serve to mask the gulf that continues to widen between the government and the American people. But are there opportunities hiding amongst these challenges? What tools (methodological and pragmatic) do we need to seize them? Can the people who are being left out of the mainstream political process (the “others”) come together and fill the contemporary political void?
Come hear Jackie Salit, a leader of the growing independent movement, discuss the questions we face during this moment in history, and the challenges of “Finding Otherness” in a world of woe.
Jackie Salit is a political innovator and advocate for America’s most distressed voters — independents — now 43% of the electorate. The President of Independent Voting, she has built the largest network of activist independents in the country and is a sought after coalition partner in the pursuit of empowering ordinary Americans. An organizer of cross-ideological political alliances and campaigns, large and small, Salit chronicles that personal and political history of risk and reward in Independents Rising (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012). A postmodern agitator and strategist, Salit is constantly exploring and building the relationship between democracy and development and is a passionate advocate for a political system that can respond to conflict, failure and change with a new political culture.
