Paintings by Rinpa artists, of the “school of [Ogata Kō]rin”—referring to the great Kyoto painter active in the early 18th century—often drew on themes from traditional Japanese poetry and literature. An understanding of the literary precedents helps elucidate the symbolism and poetic suggestiveness of paintings associated with the Rinpa aesthetic from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries.
