Individual cancers are comprised of populations of genetically distinct, separated subclones that compete for resources during the disease course, leading to dynamic evolutionary processes. High throughput technologies provide a snapshot of the disease process in space and time. To better understand therapy resistance and apply precision therapeutics, a more refined understanding of glioma evolution is required that can only be provided by multi-dimensional tumor sampling. The Verhaak Lab has characterized glioma across multiple dimensions in order to delineate evolutionary patterns, to inform optimal sampling for clinical decision making, and to demonstrate that extrachromosomal DNA elements play a critical role in gliomagenesis.
