In Everything Is Hallucinated, David Schneider and Sarah Hughes tackle the murky relationship between perception and reality.

The Talks Progress Administration (TPA) is a mad science experiment on stage – we’re pairing academic lecturers with theater directors to see what they’ll make together. The TPA is combining intellectual entertainment, creative discourse, and interactive storytelling like you’ve never seen before. What would happen if Bill Nye got cast in Sleep No More, if Jane Goodall sat down for tea with Brecht, or if Stephen Hawking wrote a new Hamilton-inspired rock opera? We don’t know, but we sure as hell can’t wait to find out.

Tonight’s offering: Everything is Hallucinated, with brain scientist David Schneider and directed by Sarah Hughes. In the age of fake news, Virtual Reality, tailored Facebook feeds, and Photoshop, it can be hard to tell what’s real. Neuroscience, perception, and illusion collide in this exploration of how our individual realities are not always what they seem.

David Schneider is a brain scientist, engineer, and Assistant Professor at the Center for Neural Science at New York University. David’s research uses augmented reality, microscopes and lasers to understand how the (mouse) brain stores memories about the past and makes predictions about the future. David studied engineering in North Dakota and invented pacemakers in Minnesota before moving to New York in 2005. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University, was a fellow at Duke University for several years, and moved back to NYC in the fall of 2017.

Sarah Hughes is a director and producer of theater and new media. She’s developed theater, installation and virtual reality works with artists and companies such as McFeely Sam Goodman, Eliza Bent, Corinne Donly, Julia May Jonas / Nellie Tinder, Cara Scarmack, Graham Sack and Sensorium, Superhero Clubhouse, and Elevator Repair Service, and her work has been seen at Abrons Arts Center, The Tank, PEN World Voices, and BAM Next Wave, among others. 2016-17 Civilians R&D Lab, New Georges Affiliated Artist, Target Margin Theater Associated Artist, Clubbed Thumb 2017-18 Directing Fellow.

The TPA is a collaboration between The Story Collider and Caveat, and is supported by Science Sandbox, a Simons Foundation initiative dedicated to engaging everyone with the process of science. Additional support provided by Yeshiva University.
