Gallery Talk/Tour: Queer Portraits

Join us for a weekly series of in-depth explorations of select works of art on view in Scenes from the Collection, the Museum’s new exhibition featuring nearly 600 works from antiquities to contemporary art—many of which are on view for the first time.

Join Chris Gartrell, Assistant Manager of Adult Programs, for an examination of two self-portraits: Nan Goldin’s Self-Portrait in Blue Bathroom, London (1980) and Ross Bleckner’s Double Portrait (Gay Flag) (1993). Although Bleckner and Goldin employ very different strategies of self-representation, close looking reveals multiple connections around queer identity, the AIDS crisis, and its impact on the art world in New York City during the 1980s and 90s.
