The Fortune Society is one of the nation’s leading reentry service organizations, providing an array of services and programs for more than 7,000 formerly incarcerated individuals each year. In 2002, Fortune opened The Fortune Academy, also known as “The Castle,” a transitional supportive housing facility in what was formerly a convent in West Harlem that provides a safe, rehabilitative community for people coming home from incarceration who would otherwise be homeless. This was followed in 2010 by the opening of the adjacent Castle Gardens, a mixed-use, supportive, and affordable residential development in a LEED-gold, environmentally sustainable building.
Open House New York and The Fortune Society invite you to tour these two facilities to hear more about Fortune’s innovative programs and services, and learn how facilities like these are supporting efforts to reform New York’s criminal justice system.
Admission is free, but advance reservations are required.
This program is organized as part of Spaces of Justice, a yearlong series organized by Open House New York to explore the architecture and infrastructure of New York’s justice system. Major support has been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. Free admission is made possible by a grant from the Reba Judith Sandler Foundation.
