Agora: How Do Museum Spaces Affect Our Experience?

In ancient Greece, the agora was a public, outdoor gathering place where people learned by discussing moral, social, cultural, and political questions. At MoMA, Agoras are an opportunity to question and examine our relationships with art, design, and society.

As museums expand both conceptually and architecturally, how can we optimize their intimacy and imaginative potential? This summer, inspired by Gaston Bachelard’s 1958 text The Poetics of Space, in which he re-introduces cabinets, wardrobes, and drawers as sites of intimate reflection, we’ll consider how space facilitates intimate relationships with art.
