Bronx Hub
Once the “Times Square of the Bronx”
WITH LAURENCE FROMMER
The area where 149th Street intersects with Third, Willis, and Melrose Avenues was once known as “the Times Square of the Bronx” because it served as a hub for transportation, shopping, and cultural sites, including a grand 1910 opera house. Can the “Bronx Hub” be reborn in the 21st century as the center of a new “Downtown Bronx?” As we visit this crossroads of possibilities we will ask: “Why hasn’t the Hub seen as much new development as downtown Jamaica despite its greater proximity to Manhattan?” Are location and substantial infrastructure enough – or are there other important ingredients that must be present for successful redevelopment?
