Small Orange Journal Poetry Reading for RAICES

On Monday, September 17th at 7pm, join Book Culture LIC and Small Orange for a special poetry reading and fundraiser, Small Orange Journal–Reading for RAICES. Featuring readings by Lynn Melnick, Joseph O. Legaspi, Nadra Mabrouk, and Sean Frederick Forbes. 

A basket will be passed around to collect donations for RAICES – The Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services. Electronic donations will also be collected. If you are unable to attend, donations can be made online at: https://www.raicestexas.org/donate/

Lynn Melnick is the author of the poetry collections Landscape with Sex and Violence and If I Should Say I Have Hope. She serves on the Executive Board of VIDA: Women in Literary Arts.

Joseph O. Legaspi is the author of the poetry collections Threshold and Imago, both from CavanKerry Press; and three chapbooks: Postcards (Ghost Bird Press), Aviary, Bestiary (Organic Weapon Arts), and Subways (Thrush Press). Recent works have appeared in POETRY, New England Review, World Literature Today, Best of the Net, and the Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a-Day. He cofounded Kundiman (www.kundiman.org), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to nurturing generations of writers and readers of Asian American literature.

Nadra Mabrouk’s work has appeared in RHINO, Cordella Magazine, Tinderbox Poetry Journal, among others. Her chapbook, How Things Tasted When We Were Young, was published in 2016. She is currently pursuing her MFA in Poetry at New York University as a Goldwater Fellow.

Sean Frederick Forbes is an Assistant Professor-in-Residence of English and the Director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Connecticut. His poems have appeared in Chagrin River Review, Sargasso, A Journal of Caribbean Literature, Language, and Culture, Crab Orchard Review, Long River Review, and Midwest Quarterly. In 2009, he received a Woodrow Wilson Mellon Mays University Fellows Travel and Research Grant for travel to Providencia, Colombia. Providencia, his first book of poetry, was published in 2013. He has co-edited two collections of personal narratives titled What Does It Mean to be White in America? Breaking the White Code of Silence: Personal Narratives by White Americans (2016) and The Beiging of America: Being Mixed Race in the 21st Century (2017). In 2017, he received first place in the Nutmeg Poetry Contest from the Connecticut Poetry Society.

Small Orange is a poetry journal that publishes three times a year in the months of October, January and April.  Each issue comprises roughly seven poets, the work of one visual artist and one interview. They love all kinds of poetry and are dedicated to featuring the most beautiful, inspiring and thoughtful work provided to them. The Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families and refugees in Central and South Texas. RAICES is the largest immigration non-profit in Texas with offices in Austin, Corpus, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio.
