Since taking office last year, President Trump and members of his administration have violated countless norms meant to protect against corruption and abuse. But in his new book, An Uncivil War, Washington Postreporter Greg Sargent argues that, for all the drama, Trump is not the problem. Rather, he is a symptom of a larger democratic crisis at hand.
In this Brennan Center public conversation, Sargent will discuss how hyperpartisanship, dismal civic engagement, and foreign interference in our elections, among other factors, have caused a democratic backslide. He will examine the political behavior that brought us to the present moment, as well as steps we can take to fortify our democratic institutions and restore civility to our public discourse.
