What makes a university great? Its faculty? Its students? Its curriculum? All three to be sure. But also its architecture. Great buildings inspire. They transform how we think, how we see, how we learn—how we act.
In this illustrated talk, painter and author Adam Van Doren will use images of his watercolor paintings from his most recent book, The Stones of Yale,to explore the rich architecture of one of our country’s most distinguished places of higher learning. The book is also filled with observations from a diverse cross section of Yale alumni – actor Sam Waterson, writers Christopher Buckley and David McCullough, Yale librarian Judith Schiff, NFL great Calvin Hill, and architect Cesar Pelli among others.
A witty and charming speaker, Van Doren combines a knowledge of architectural styles with stories of the emotions and memories buildings evoke.
