Transit discussions are often about Trains or Buses: what technology is best? But transit is really about PEOPLE. Riders care about walkability, connectivity, frequency, travel time, reliability, capacity, and information much more than they care about steel wheels or overhead wires.

Transportation expert and TransitCenter Board Member Christof Spieler’s new book, Trains, Buses, People: An Opinionated Atlas of US Transit, looks at how cities can build successful transit for people. He profiles the 47 metropolitan areas in the US that have rail transit or BRT. By taking an honest look at what makes good and bad transit, he shows that it is possible, with the right tools, to build good transit.

Christof Spieler, VP & Director of Planning at Huitt-Zollars, Senior Lecturer at Rice University, and Board Member at TransitCenter
Christof has worked, written, and spoken extensively on transit and urban planning. He served on the board of directors of Houston’s Metropolitan Transit Authority from 2010 to 2018 where he initiated Houston’s bus network redesign. At Huitt-Zollars, he has developed land use and transportation plans around the country. At Rice he teaches courses in transportation in both the architecture and engineering schools.
