Albert Woodfox, Author of Acclaimed Memoir “Solitary,” to Head Panel on Solitary Confinement
Albert Woodfox, author of the recently released memoir “Solitary: Unbroken by Four Decades in Solitary Confinement. My Story of Transformation and Hope,” will lead a panel discussion on solitary confinement at The Fortune Society’s Long Island City Headquarters on March 28.
Described by Dwight Garner, a book critic for The New York Times, as an “uncommonly powerful memoir,” “Solitary” details Woodfox’s four decades in solitary confinement for a crime that he did not commit. “He recounts consistently brutal treatment by guards, rats and vermin, deadly heat and no way out of solitary for good behavior. His memoir is the story of how he survived,” said Garner in his March 4 review of the book.
Joining Woodfox on the panel will be experts Vincent Schiraldi, Founder of the Justice Policy Institute, and Ismael Nazario, a Database System Analyst at Fortune.
Ismael Nazario, who lived in solitary confinement for two years as a teenager on Rikers Island, has been a valued employee at The Fortune Society for 5 years. Ismael has participated in Ted Talks and panels throughout the United States; and his story is well documented in Bill Moyer’s film, “Rikers: An American Jail.”
Vincent Schiraldi, an American juvenile justice policy reformer and expert, is the Founder of the Justice Policy Institute, and has served as Director of the Juvenile Corrections in Washington D.C., Commissioner of the New York City Department of Probation, and as Senior Advisor to the New York City Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice.
The panel discussion will be moderated David Rothenberg, Founder of The Fortune Society.
The Fortune Society is one of the nation’s most respected nonprofit organizations serving and advocating for people with criminal justice involvement.
