Reimagine Organic Waste: A Community Conversation

Be a community Solutionary! The Brooklyn Solid Waste Advisory Board (SWAB), in partnership with the Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams’ Office, will host a community conversation about the issues and possible solutions of food waste in New York City in order to improve the participation rate of organics recovery overall, including the Department of Sanitation’s residential curbside organics collection program. We will have an intro from Council Member Antonio Reynoso, Chair of the Sanitation and Solid Waste Management Committee.

First, you’ll learn about the financial, environmental, and human costs of transporting and exporting our garbage. City-wide leaders in organics recovery and environmental justice will be on hand to offer their inside views about possible solutions including examples from other cities and countries that could work here to keep our organics out of landfills and incinerators, and put to beneficial reuse.

Then, you’ll participate in one of a dozen break-out groups where you’ll share your thoughts around food waste and your ideas for participating in the ideal organics collection system based on what you’ve learned!

This is your chance to share your ideas, generate solutions, and identify resources for organics waste collection here in NYC. It’s also an opportunity to connect with the community of folks interested in developing and implementing sustainable systems for waste processing in NYC.
