Indigenous Resistance and the Crisis of Mother Earth: Paths to Climate Justice – Day 1

Around the world, indigenous communities and movements are revitalizing indigenous knowledge and ways of organizing to defend lands, restore communal self-determination, and protect Mother Earth as they confront (neo)colonial, patriarchal, capitalist and state projects that undermine indigenous territories and drive Anthropocene crises like climate change and biodiversity loss.

Two events will be held; the first on April 22nd and the second April 23rd.

The first event is a panel that opens a space for indigenous leaders and organizations from across the Americas to share their struggles and achievements in the face of a changing climate.

Panelists include:

Tom BK Goldtooth (Dine’ and Dakota), Executive Director of the Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN).

Sonia Guajajara (Guajajara Indigenous Peoples), General Coordinator of the Articulação dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil (APIB, Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil).

Eriel Tchekwie Deranger, Executive Director of Indigenous Climate Action

Dali Ángel Pérez (Zapotec), Youth Coordinator of CIARENA, A.C. (Oaxaca, Mexico), co-chair of the Global Indigenous Caucus and coordinator of the Red de Jóvenes Indígenas de Centroamérica y México (Network of Indigenous Youth from Mexico and Central America)

The panel will be moderated by Milano School of Policy, Management, and Environment Professor Leonardo Figueroa Helland and will feature indigenous environmental activists from Mesoamerican, North American and South American communities in conversation with each other and the audience.
