Lady Fatimah

This course will cover the first lady in Islam, a symbol of women’s rights as she was the first to fight for her inheritance. Fourteen hundred years ago, it was unheard of for a woman to go to court to fight for her right to property. Lady Fatimah had no lawyer, so she represented herself instead. She presented all of the evidence showing she was the only child of the prophet Muhammad, but her request was denied by the state. In this course, you will learn about her life and what she represents for the religion of Islam.

Nadia Batool Bokhari is a journalist with 13 years of national and international reporting experience across Pakistan, Iraq, India, the U.K. and U.S., focusing on issues of social justice, women’s rights and healthcare. She has experience in hosting and producing television and radio programs, as well as researching and reporting for print, online media, and blogs.

In collaboration with Prospect Park Alliance, Brooklyn Public Library presents University Open Air, a free, three-week series of classes beginning Tuesday, June 11th in Prospect Park’s former Rose Garden.
