For decades, Americans saw the world through the lens of the photographers at LIFE magazine, and our new exhibition, LIFE: Six Women Photographers, explores the work of the groundbreaking women who helped create that worldview. Join William J. Simmons, co-curator of the exhibition, and the influential curator and writer Marvin Heiferman as they reflect on visual storytelling and the many ways women have played a central role in the history of photography, both as art and journalism.
Marvin Heiferman is a curator and writer, and his new book, Seeing Science: How Photography Reveals the Universe, is out in May from Aperture.
William J. Simmons is Provost Fellow in the Humanities in the art history Ph.D. program of the University of Southern California. He was the 2017-18 Mellon Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellow in Women’s History at the New-York Historical Society.
Refreshments will be served.
