Take a behind-the-scenes look at the historic Greenwich Village townhouse where the Whitney Museum of American Art was born nearly 90 years ago.
Join New York Adventure Club for rare access inside the original site of the Whitney Museum of American Art, an 1877 carriage house in Greenwich Village that became the art studio & salon for sculptor and arts patron Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in the early 20th century.
Led by a member of the New York Studio School (NYSS), our exploration of the historic building will include:
- A discussion around the storied art career and patronage of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney
- An overview of the near demolition of the building in 1967, and ongoing restoration project by the NYSS
- A walkthrough of the former exhibition spaces of the original Whitney Museum, and access to the private cul-de-sac MacDougal Alley, located behind the NYSS
- A rare look inside the historic studio featuring highlights such as Robert Winthrop Chanler’s bronze-and-plaster fireplace bas-relief of flames embellished with animals, fantastical creatures, and celestial motifs that extend overhead onto the ceiling.
