Young Book Artists, a Bilingual Book Arts Class!

In this workshop for kids, students will explore the concept of three-dimensional books inspired by materials, methods and perspectives that will be presented by the instructor in English and Spanish.
The course will focus on art and storytelling important historical events using printmaking and bookbinding. Students may also use other art forms, such as drawing, painting, or collage. The instructor will demonstrate engraving techniques for printing such as linoleum, stencil and pochoir, and will demonstrate bookbinding techniques such as a flag book, dos-a-dos and pop-up structures. By the end of this course, students will reflect on what they created, and will take home their own book arts creation!
For Parents / Guardians:
Parents must be present during the duration of the class for supervision. There will be a half hour break approximately halfway through the class. This class will be conducted in English and Spanish. Native speakers of both languages are welcome.
One sign-up includes a spot in the class for both a child and their parent/guardian.

About the Instructor:

María Verónica San Martín is a Chilean artist based in New York who explores the impacts of history, memory and trauma in her prints, artist books, installation, sculpture and performance. She received her MA in Book Arts from the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design, GWU, attended the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, New York in 2017-2018, and was a scholar at the Center for Book Arts, New York in 2017 as well as an artist-in-residence at Art OMI, Ghent, NY in 2016. She has been awarded twice by the National Art Fund of Chile and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her work is part of more than 45 collections including the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Centre Pompidou, Paris. San Martin has been teaching at two main Universities in Chile from 2014-2016, The NY Center for Book Arts, 2019, and is preparing a summer course at Penland School of Craft, NC, 2020. San Martín has been performing and lecturing her “Moving Memorial” series and “Dignidad” project at international museums, galleries, public libraries and schools since 2016.
