In Snowden’s Box, award-winning journalists and best friends Jessica Bruder and Dale Maharidge recount how they got swept into the largest national-security leak of the century as behind-the-scenes players, and what their unwitting involvement taught them about the demise of privacy in the digital age. Bruder’s and Maharidge’s initially stumbling, increasingly paranoid, and sometimes comic efforts to help bring Snowden’s leaks to light, and ultimately, to understand their significance, unfold in an engrossing narrative that includes emails and diary entries from filmmaker Laura Poitras. Full of insight and odd, ironic details, Snowden’s Box is an illuminating story on the status of transparency, privacy, and trust in the age of surveillance. The book includes an appendix suggesting what citizens and activists can do to protect privacy and democracy. Moderating the online conversation between Bruder and Maharidge for this launch event is author and former editor of Harper’s Magazine James Marcus.
