ADAPTABILITY: A CRITICAL SKILL IN CHANGING TIMES

The ability to adapt swiftly and effectively to shifting circumstances has always been a valuable skill — enabling quick-thinking individuals and organizations to overcome challenges and take full advantage of new opportunities.

Today, it’s more critical than ever — as we adapt to the ever-evolving measures rolled out in response to COVID-19, and look ahead toward the many ways that aspects of our world are likely to shift as a result of this situation — on both a personal and collective level.

Before logging into this online discussion, take a look at this quick 13-minute TED Talk from seasoned blue-chip executive coach and transformation consultant Jennifer Jones — who describes her equation for high-performance adaptability through change: https://youtu.be/MN_zmzKT2Wk/.

Then join us to share your own thoughts, insights, and experiences related to this topic, including:

How adaptable do you tend to be under normal circumstances? On a scale of 1 to 10, how comfortable are you in responding to shifts and changes in your everyday life? Do you actively seek opportunities to step outside your comfort zone and adopt new practices for growth purposes, or does it typically take a strong external catalyst (e.g., the influence of a friend / family member / supervisor / peer or some sort of motivating circumstance) to shift you out of fairly predictable routines in thinking and behavior? How eager or averse have you typically been in embracing the prospect of change?

How has the current COVID-19 situation affected your personal and professional life? How difficult has it been for you to adapt to all of these changes?

Have there been any unexpected benefits or “hidden blessings” that you’ve experienced during this most unusual lockdown situation? For example, perhaps you’ve found the time to learn a new skill, practice a neglected hobby, spend more time with family, etc.? What has surprised you the most about your response to the present lockdown situation?

How do you expect the world to change as a result of the present COVID-19 situation? How do you think it will affect our everyday lives on a personal and professional level? What changes do you expect to see in terms of societal structures (e.g., government, finance, business, education, healthcare, travel, entertainment, etc.)? What’s your outlook on the future of the world as a result of this situation?

Think back through your personal history, and recall another unexpected circumstance that required you to change your typical habits, practices, and / or way of thinking. How were you able to cope with the situation? What did you learn? Were you surprised in any way about your ability to adapt to the necessary changes?

Tell us about a time when you started a new job. What skills, systems, and other key pieces of knowledge were you required to learn to perform well in that position? How quickly were you able to adapt to that new working environment?

In terms of the first variable in the “Adaptability Equation” discussed in the TED Talk — i.e., PURPOSE — what would you identify as your primary long-term objective at this stage in life? What is the most important thing that you would like to achieve, as an overall goal? How aligned is your current life with this vision for yourself? How has the current COVID-19 situation motivated you to stop and think differently about what matters most to you in life?

In terms of the second variable in the “Adaptability Equation” discussed in the TED Talk — i.e., INQUISITIVENESS — how often do you scan your environment, assessing the need to try new things to improve results and your overall well-being? How often do you tend to question the status quo and consider the possibility of trying alternative approaches? How has the COVID-19 situation prompted you to think differently about routine aspects of your life that you previously took for granted?

In terms of the third variable in the “Adaptability Equation” discussed in the TED Talk — i.e., RESILIENCE — how adept would you say you are in coping with setbacks? What have you learned to do when faced with challenges and unexpected obstacles?

In terms of the fourth variable in the “Adaptability Equation” discussed in the TED Talk — i.e., THREAT — what types of triggers send you into panic mode or anxiety in dealing with change? How do you calm yourself down from fear and stress?

Are there any new habits that you would like to establish at this time? Studies show that it takes 21 days to adapt relatively minor habits, and an average of 66 days for most people to anchor habit behavior that requires more substantial effort and adjustment. In light of the COVID-19 lockdown situation — which has forced most of us to adjust our regular routines — are there any steps that you can take to incorporate more productive habits into your schedule?

We will be joined by members from a number of different Meetup groups for this discussion.

Looking forward to seeing all of you! In the meantime, stay safe and well!
