In the latest from Booker Prize winner Roddy Doyle, two longtime friends sit drinking in a Dublin pub. They rarely see each other anymore, but Davy has come over from England to tend to the dying father whose disapproval he fled, while Joe has recently left his wife and children for the golden girl the two men dreamed of in their youth. Carousing, heartbreak, and an indelible portrait of Dublin. Doyle is the author of eleven acclaimed novels, including The Commitments, The Van (a finalist for the Booker Prize), Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha (winner of the Booker Prize), The Woman Who Walked Into Doors, A Star Called Henry, and, most recently, Smile. Doyle has also written two collections of stories, and several works for children and young adults.

Sally Rooney’s NORMAL PEOPLE caught the imagination of readers and viewers with its evocative depiction of the student life at Trinity College, but beyond the cozy sitting rooms and student parties is a complex evolving city. DUBLIN VOICES highlights the diverse narratives that spring from the Irish capital. Our summer series features: Colum McCann, a Dubliner with a truly global outlook whose fierce new novel APIEROGON depicts love and loss in the Middle East; the US launch of LOVE, the latest acclaimed novel by Roddy Doyle, poet biographer of Dublin city & its suburbs; and the intensely personal, corporeal essays of Sinead Gleeson’s CONSTELLATIONS which delve into what it is to be a modern Irish woman, reflecting Dublin not as a single city, but as multiple, sometimes conflicting communities. DUBLIN VOICES presents a case study of one of the world’s most celebrated literary centers: rooted in history and story, propelled into an inevitable modernity and now forced to confront the entangled realities of a post-pandemic urban space.

Instead of a set ticket price, we ask that you contribute what you can to support Politics and Prose Bookstore and our virtual event series. We know that everyone has been affected in these trying times, and we will continue to make our programming accessible to all.
