This event is part of Archtober’s virtual Travel To series. Travel To seeks to highlight iconic architecture and historically significant sites across the United States. Join us as curators, preservationists, historians (and more!) bring these places and spaces alive in the comfort of your home.

Join us for a virtual tour of The Glass House, former home of Philip Johnson and an essential chapter in the history of modernism in America. Hilary Lewis, Chief Curator and Creative Director at The Glass House, will present the history of the property in relation to Johnson’s extensive experience with the early days of modernism and his many decades in the practice of architecture. Johnson’s roles at The Museum of Modern Art as a curator and major patron also contribute to how the property melds architecture, art, and landscape.

Hilary Lewis, Chief Curator and Creative Director, The Glass House

Hilary Lewis is the Chief Curator and Creative Director at The Glass House. She has been connected to the Glass House since the early 1990s when she first worked directly with Philip Johnson on a series of book projects, curatorial efforts, and a multi-year effort to record Johnson’s memoirs of his life in art, architecture, and culture.

She is the co-author of two books on the architect, Philip Johnson: The Architect in His Own Words and The Architecture of Philip Johnson. Educated respectively in public policy, architectural history and urban planning at Princeton, MIT and Harvard, she has also taught architectural history, urban planning and real estate finance & development at MIT and Harvard.

The Glass House will resume ground passes on June 22. Advanced tickets required. Please visit theglasshouse.org to reserve.
