Marcus Yi: Lucky 88 Food Court The Musical
The show is inspired by all of the food courts in Flushing, and uses the food court environment to explore the multi faceted lives of people that the average American might not otherwise get a chance to know. Themes I would like to explore include immigration, workers rights, intergenerational conflict, geriatric dating, and inter-cultural exchange.
The show focuses on 3 food stalls and the people that work there: At the hand pulled noodle stall, 60 year old Shen Zha Wang is struggling to put his son through law school. Unbeknownst to him, his son has dropped out and instead wants to take over the family business. At the dumpling stall, 50 year old widow Mei Ling Fu, has moved on from her husband’s death and is now ready to start dating again. At the boba tea stall, 20 year old Fan Fan Xiu really wants to be a hip hop dancer but has to work to pay for her mother’s chemotherapy.
