‘Hilma af Klint: Abstract Paintings for the Future’ Webinar

While most artists in 1906 were painting traditional portraits and landscapes, Hilma af Klint had other plans when she began creating abstract paintings that were radically different than anything that had been seen before. This is the amazing story of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, whose art — which can only be described as bold, colorful, and untethered from any recognizable references to the physical world — almost never saw the light of day.

Join New York Adventure Club as we uncover the incredible life and art of Hilma af Klint (1862–1944), whose inspiration by the spiritual world helped her produce groundbreaking paintings in the territory of abstraction.

Led by Sharon Vatsky of the Guggenheim Museum — Director of Audience Engagement, and one of the museum’s most experienced Educators — this unique showcase of one of the art world’s most under-recognized innovators will include:

• A brief biography of Hilma af Klint, from where her inspiration came from to why she stipulated that her incredibly innovative artworks not be shown for twenty years following her death
• A discussion of her connections to spiritual movements and leading figures of the time
• An analysis of the symbols contained within her groundbreaking works, and how they likely inspired the likes of Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, and other artists

About Sharon

Sharon Vatsky, Director of Audience Engagement at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, oversees internships, access programs, and initiatives with the museum’s global constellation. From 1990 – 2000 she served as Curator of Education at the Queens Museum of Art. Vatsky teaches graduate courses in Museum Education at New York University and Teacher’s College, Columbia University. She is the author of Museum Gallery Activities: A Handbook, (Rowman and Littlefield, 2018) for the American Alliance of Museums.
