In his scintillating new Sonata for Cello and Piano, Emmy Award-winning composer and Graduate Center professor John Musto seamlessly brings together the erudition of a contrapuntal master, the brilliance and “groove” of a jazz instrumentalist, and the rhythmic exuberance of a Brazilian dance champion. The Cello Sonata is a fast-paced, vibrant conversation between two instrumentalists who share and trade musical commentary, explore and develop ideas, and constantly challenge and inspire each other. Two dizzying, non-stop outer movements, overflowing with rich inventiveness, surround a soulful, yearning meditation. The two stellar artists who premiered the work last year will reprise their performance on this program – direct from Aaron Copland’s studio! Includes a pre-performance discussion, and live, post-performance Q&A among composer, performers, and viewers.
Featured Music from Copland House artists: Alexis Pia Gerlach, cellist, and Michael Boriskin, pianist.
Composer John Musto is on piano performance faculty and coordinator of the D.M.A. Program in Music Performance at The Graduate Center, CUNY.
