New York, NY- Space 776 is pleased to present ‘Between Us and Then’, a week-long group show of Deskarga Groupo, on view from November 20 through 25 at 37-39 Clinton Street in the Lower East Side.
Between Us and Then is a pop-up art fair scattered with zines, photo prints, paintings, illustrations, video, and musical performance. A bricolage of local talent litters the space. The central theme of the show is a meditation on the self; the body in relation to time and space. The personal and tangible confronts—the elusive and abstract. The stoicism of portraits frozen in time defies the dread of human aging.
The rhythm of skateboarding videos is the soundtrack to bodies zooming through space. The linear narrative inherent in book-bound codices is bent under the textural zine experience. Many of the pieces read as a joyful yet pensive celebration of life. All artists have been encouraged to include work created during the past year.
The format of the show will take the form of an art fair. Visitors are encouraged to walk the space and browse the collection of artwork on the walls, table, and floor. There will be musical performances during the opening reception as well as video projections.

Deskarga Groupo is a multimedia and cross/cultural artist collective and independent publisher working in the fields of zines, photography, video, and music. Their name is derived from the Spanish word descarga – as in the free-form jazz jam session – and deskarga – Ilocano for unload. The etymology of the term “Groupo” is synthesized from its English-language root and is used as an alternative to the played-out term ‘collective’. Their community operates on interdisciplinary forms and seeks to collaborate, unload, discharge, and improvise using the themes of placement and identity as a cultural sifter.
