‘Spanning the City: A History of New York’s Most Iconic Bridges’ Webinar
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the history of some of New York City’s most iconic bridges, which have each played an enormous role in the history and development of the city and surrounding region.
Led by writer, historian, and New York City tour guide Lucie Levine, our virtual experience surrounding the bridges around New York will include:
- A chronological look at the history of New York’s still-standing bridges, beginning in 1848 with the opening of High Bridge, which was part of the Croton Aqueduct system that brought clean running water to the city for the first time
- Why a variety of different types of engineering methods were used to construct the bridges
- The social and cultural history of the bridges, from ones that helped establish a Native American community of ironworkers in Brooklyn to those immortalized in art and literature
- The crucial roles the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, and Williamsburg Bridge have had in the Manhattan and Brooklyn relationship (and which bridge contains a secret champagne cellar)
- Fascinating and quirky stories from throughout the decades, including which bridges served as a highway for elephants to one with a secret champagne vault
Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Lucie — any and all questions about the bridges of NYC are welcomed and encouraged!
