‘Art of Real New York: The Civil War and its Aftermath’ Webinar

During the Civil War, art was not a priority — after all, people who might have purchased art needed to focus their funds on more basic needs. Only a handful of artists — notably Winslow Homer and John Rogers — could sustain themselves during the war years; their works offered compelling commentary on what life and war were like for ordinary people. This is the story of art created during one of the most tumultuous periods in American history — a story that addresses issues still familiar today.

Join New York Adventure Club for the seventh part of a multi-part series that explores the impact of art throughout NYC and beyond. In this part, we embark on an art-centric journey through subtle, often coded, depictions of the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Led by Rena Tobey, American Art Historian and Professor at NYU’s School for Professional Studies, our artistic deep dive will include:

  • A look at the artistic sparks that clarified the causes culminating in war
  • An overview of art created during the Civil War period, including a struggling woman painter
  • A focus on two artists who became important reporters and interpreters — illustrator and painter Winslow Homer and sculptor John Rogers — who works teased out the complexities of attempting to reconcile irreconcilable differences
  • Understanding how New York City worked as a launching pad for art that revealed the dynamics and tensions of the 1860s and 1870s

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Rena — any and all questions about these artworks are welcomed and encouraged!

Rena Tobey is an American art historian whose passion centers on making art accessible, insightful, and fun. She teaches at NYU’s School for Professional Studies and conducts lively, interactive tours of museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Jewish Museum, and the American Folk Art Museum. Rena’s research and writing centers on American women artists working before 1945, with particular interest in the challenges they faced in bucking societal norms.
