A Conversation with Ahmed Abdullah about his memoir:
A Strange Celestial Road: My Time in the Sun Ra Arkestra
In his fascinating memoir, Ahmed Abdullah tells of growing up in Harlem and his early cultural and political influences. He charts the rise of the New York “loft jazz” movement of the 1970s – a vital chapter of Black creative music that was shunned by the recording industry.
At the heart of the memoir is Ahmed Abdullah’s inside account of being a member of the Sun Ra Arkestra over two decades. Sun Ra, an incredible life force, was one of the great innovators of experimental big band jazz and a major influence on current-day Afro-futurism.
Along the way, Abdullah chronicles his spiritual development, the amazing array of musicians he worked with and learned from, his battles with addiction, tribulations as a father, and global travels. In addition to being a dynamic and creative jazz trumpeter, Ahmed is also a dedicated teacher.
