In this six-session creative-writing workshop, poet Drew Pisarra shares strategies for writing sonnets and villanelles while studying classical and contemporary examples of both forms. By building skills and confidence around rhymed couplets, metered stanzas, and the exhilarating use of repetition, this course will empower students to personalize and practice two traditional (and popular) poetic forms. All levels welcome!
About the educator: Drew Pisarra is the author of two acclaimed sonnet collections: Infinity Standing Up (2019) which The Washington Post praised as “…brazen and lusty and often amusing” and Periodic Boyfriends (2023) which The Washington Blade asserted “puts all of us, chemistry lovers and naysayers, under his spell.” His latest poetry collection, Fassbinder: His Movies, My Poems (2024), kicks off with a villanelle.
