A Stamp Interrupted by War – The Hong Kong 8c KGVI Definitive with Ingo Nessel

Governments issue two types of stamps: commemoratives and definitives. Commemoratives are short-lived issues to commemorate a historical event, a famous person or any topic of national or international relevance. Definitive stamps are the continuously printed issues that serve the everyday postal needs of the country. In England, when the monarch changes, so do the images on the Definitive stamps; we saw this recently when King Charles assumed the throne from Queen Elizabeth.

Imagine this situation.  For over 26 years, the face of King George V was the face on stamps throughout the entire British Empire.  On January 20, 1936, King George died. In due course, preparations were made to change the image on the stamps to Edward VIII. Stop the presses.  In December 1936, Edward abdicated the throne and George VI became King. These changes were more than enough for the mighty Great Britain to handle. Think about what these changes meant for the politically tumultuous Hong Kong during World War II.”

Ingo Nessel will present and demonstrate how the obsessive study of a single stamp can lead to discoveries and interesting sidelines.

About Ingo Nessel

Philately advances his practice of lifelong learning.

Ingo has embraced social media with his Instagram JustBeautifulStamps which features regular posts of random stamps selected for their artistic or graphic beauty, and currently has approx. 1,800 followers.

Why Hong Kong? During his 43 years in global shipping and logistics he had the good fortune of worldwide travels. On his first business trip to the Far East in 1986 he fell in love with Hong Kong – its high-achieving people, its history as the conduit for the expansion of trade with China, and its attractive stamps and complex postal history. He decided then and there to specialize in Hong Kong philately. Meanwhile he is North American VP of the Hong Kong Study Circle and conducts quarterly meetings of fellow HK specialists in Toronto.
