Ageless Vegan: Tracye McQuirter with Mary Davis McQuirter and Rachel Atcheson

As veganism and plant-based diets become increasingly mainstream—and accessible—more people are recognizing the health benefits of dropping meat from their meals. Tracye McQuirter and her mother, Mary McQuirter, celebrate their three decades as vegans with good health and vibrancy. They are often mistaken for being fifteen or twenty years younger than their actual ages—fifty and eighty—and they attribute their lack of pain and chronic disease to their plant-based diet of colorful whole foods. In Ageless Vegan: The Secret to Living a Long and Healthy Plant-Based Life, they share best practices for jumpstarting a vegan lifestyle and maintaining it long term. Tracye and Mary offer a 14-step plan to make the journey at once easier and more delicious; share tips on how to make small substitutions at first and how to restock a pantry with essential items while on a budget; and recommend superfoods for health and longevity.

Tracye McQuirter, MPH, was named a national food hero changing the way America eats for the better by Vegetarian Times. She directed the nation’s first federally funded vegan nutrition program. As an adjunct professor at the University of the District of Columbia, Tracye designed a plant-based nutrition curriculum for DC Public Schools. She recently created the African American Vegan Starter Guide in partnership with Farm Sanctuary. She is the author of By Any Greens Necessary and her work has been featured in the New York Timesthe Washington PostEssence, and Bon Appétit. More info at ByAnyGreensNecessary.com and @byanygreens.

Mary Davis McQuirter is a thirty-year vegan who continues to be healthy, fit, and active into her eighties. She has been retired from Covington and Burling law firm for twenty years and has been an active volunteer for more than forty years, helping children, abused women, mentally ill adults, and families in need. Mary has also worked with her daughter, Tracye, to teach vegan nutrition classes for seniors in Washington, DC.

The authors will be introduced by Rachel Atcheson, Deputy Strategist at Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams Office.
