An Evening celebrating Margaret Cavendish
Hosted by editor Michael Robbins
With poets Paige Ackerson-Kiely and other special guests
Wine reception to follow
Greenlight hosts an evening celebrating Margaret Cavendish, the groundbreaking 17th century poet, on the occasion of a new collection of selected poems edited by Michael Robbins and published by the New York Review of Books. Cavendish, the Duchess of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, had a wide and astonishingly vivid range of interests, none of which were acceptable for a woman to pursue in 17th century England. She was a utopian visionary, a polemicist, playwright, scientist, poet, and science-fiction pioneer. She produced startlingly modern poems unlike anything else published in the seventeenth century for their mixture of scientific and proto-Blakean vision, their deep sympathy with the nonhuman world, and their feminist passion. Editor Michael Robbins leads a reading and discussion of Cavendish’s work and work inspired by her, followed by a wine reception.
