In 2007 three notable independent presses — Counterpoint, Shoemaker & Hoard, and Soft Skull Press – combined to become Counterpoint LLC, publishing “fresh, cutting-edge literary voices.” Three voices from Counterpoint’s stable read together at Greenlight this evening in a celebration of the publisher and their new work. Karen E. Bender (author of Like Normal People) presents her new novel A Town of Empty Rooms, the story of a troubled New York City family transplanted to a Jewish community in the Bible Belt where matters of faith, identity, community, and family all fall into the crosshairs of contemporary small-town America. Annapurna Potluri’s novel The Grammarian is the elegiac tale of a French philologist who becomes involved with a wealthy family in a remote part of India in 1911, as his goal of studying the Telugu language creates an unexpected and consequential intimacy with the family’s oldest daughter. Acclaimed novelist and critic Lynne Sharon Schwartz’s novel Two-Part Inventions explores the nature of truth, marriage and the pursuit of perfection in the story of the death of a concert pianist whose fame is secretly based on recordings altered by her husband. Join us for an evening celebrating a great independent press.
