Architecture, War, and the Erasure of Identity

Tim Slade’s film The Destruction of Memory, based on the book by writer Robert Bevan, looks at the ongoing and intentional ‘war against culture’ through the destruction of architecture in war-torn countries around the globe. Buildings and sites that have stood for millenia have been targeted as artifacts of cultural heritage, “particularly in campaigns of ethnic genocide and cleansing.” The film examines the links between the protection of culture and the protection of human rights. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker.
