Art Forms in Nature

Art in the Lab and the Morbid Anatomy Museum are collaborating on a three-event series celebrating the historical context of science aesthetics.

In 1899, the celebrated biologist Ernst Haeckel produced his best-known monograph: Art forms in nature which included gorgeously rendered images produced from microscopic observation.

In this fun, low-key, drawing class participants will have access to microscope slides of many of Haeckel’s favorite subjects, including Radiolaria, Diatoms, and Forminifera.  These will be complimented by short talks on Haeckel and his work (Joanna Ebenstein) and about patterns of growth and symmetry in nature (Alison Dell) as well as the complimentarity of science and art (Irina Ellison).  We’ll provide some short suggested readings to power conversation after the event. Registration is capped so each participant can have unlimited time at their own microscope.  Basic art supplies are provided, but feel free to bring your own.

This event is generously supported by St. Francis College.
