‘Art of Real New York: Women and Their Salons’ Webinar
While we take New York City’s first-rate art scene for granted these days, it could have easily never existed. Had it not been for a handful of women who decided to rebel against traditional lives in the domestic sphere, NYC may not have become a center for artistic imagination. This is the story of four wealthy women from the early 20th century who devoted their time, money, and talent to making New York one of the premier locations of fine art in the world.
Join New York Adventure Club for the fourth part of a multi-part series that explores the impact of art throughout NYC and beyond. In this part, we embark on an art-centric journey highlighting the effects of four powerful women who made New York a global art center: Anna Hyatt Huntington, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, and Florine Stettheimer.
Led by Rena Tobey, American Art Historian and Professor at NYU’s School for Professional Studies, our virtual showcase of these ground-breaking women will include:
- The rise of women as art salon hosts, and what exactly happened at these ground-breaking events
- A look at the artwork of three often-overlooked women artists
- A case study of the controversial mural project at Rockefeller Center
- An understanding of how the New York City art world owes a debt to philanthropic women
Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Rena — any and all questions about these artworks are welcomed and encouraged!
