Artists and Activists Discuss Human Trafficking

Following a performance of “Angel’s Bone,” a musical-theatrical presentation about the plight of two fallen angels held captive by their human hosts, artists and activists will discuss the plight of real-world victims of human trafficking. The discussion, moderated by Trinity Wall Street’s Bob Scott, will feature composer Du Yun and librettist Royce Vavrek and human trafficking activists including:

  • Shelia Simpkins McClain, profiled by Nicholas Kristof in his Oct 12 New York Times column,“From the Streets to the World’s Best Mom.” McClain was caught up from childhood in sex trafficking in Nashville, came through the Magdalene program started by an Episcopal priest at Vanderbilt, graduated in December with a BA in psychology, and is working to bring women out of trafficking.
  • The Very Rev. Mike Kinman, president of the board of Magdalene St. Louis, an innovative program to help women escape trafficking and prostitution, modeled on the successful Magdalene Nashville. Trinity Wall Street is helping to support this program through a Trinity grant.
  • Rachel Lloyd, trafficking survivor, author of Girls Like Us, and founder and executive director of Girls’ Educational and Mentoring Services (GEMS) in NYC, the only organization in the state of New York specifically designed to serve girls and young women who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking.

The post-performance discussion at 6:30pm is free and open to all; seating is general admission. Tickets for the Angel’s Bone performance at 5pm are $15 each and are available at prototypefestival.org.
