Ask a Feminist—What We Talk About When We Talk About Rape
In an evening of readings and film, the celebrated author Sohaila Abdulali and the renowned filmmaker Vaishali Sinha will explore how rape culture affects our perceptions of sexual assault, feminism, and power—especially now, in the era of #MeToo.
After surviving a gang rape in Mumbai at the age of 17, Sohaila Abdulali wrote a fiery magazine piece about rape and its victims. Thirty years later, in 2012, after a heinous assault in New Delhi inspired a global uproar, Abdulali’s piece went viral. Her new book is entitled What We Talk About When We Talk About Rape.
Vaishali Sinha is the director and producer of Ask the Sexpert, which recently won the New Orleans Film Festival’s award for “Best Documentary.” Vaishali is also the codirector and producer of the documentary Made in India, which examines the personal stories behind the phenomenon of outsourcing surrogate mothers to India.
This event is part of the Open Society Foundations Women’s Rights Program’s Ask a Feminist series, which seeks to inspire a broader conversation about the meaning and practice of intersectional feminism.
