Author’s Talk: MIDNIGHT by Victoria Shorr

In her new book, MIDNIGHT: THREE WOMEN AT THE HOUR OF RECKONING, writer and activist Victoria Shorr examines some of the most important moments in the lives of three significant women: Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, and Joan of Arc. Shorr’s brief but generous novelistic biographies tell the stories of pivotal moments in the lives of these women as they reconcile with unknown futures, loss, love, and death.

“Midnight is a flamboyant display of empathy and wit. Written with a novelist’s narrative flair and a biographer’s factual command, Shorr re-creates and reassesses the lives of Jane Austen, Mary Shelly, and Joan of Arc at the hour of their reckoning. A deft, vivid, first-rate read that delights and informs on every bold page.” —John Lahr, author of Joy Ride and Tennessee Williams: Mad Pilgrimage of the Flesh

Victoria Shorr’s first novel, Backlands, was named one of Booklist’s top-ten first novels of 2015. She cofounded the Archer School for Girls and the Pine Ridge Girls’ School in South Dakota, the first independent, culturally based, college-prep school for girls on a Native reservation in America.
