‘Billion Oyster Project & The History of New York Harbor’ Webinar

While oysters are undeniably delicious, there’s even a better reason to love them — did you know they help protect coastlines against storm surge, and filter nitrogen pollution from our waterways? Get ready for a crash course lesson on these famous shellfish, all while learning about one local organization’s goal of repopulating New York Harbor with a billion of them.

Join New York Adventure Club for a virtual oyster experience with Billion Oyster Project — founded in 2014 and headquartered on Governors Island, non-profit organization Billion Oyster Project is dedicated to restoring oyster reefs in New York Harbor through public education initiatives.

Led by Billion Oyster Project staff members Tatiana Castro, Robina Taliaferrow, Helene Hetrick, and Kathryn Robling, our all-encompassing digital showcase surrounding oysters will include:

  • brief history of New York Harbor and how it once was the oyster capital of the world, containing half of the world’s oysters at one point
  • An overview of the Billion Oyster Project, from how they plan on populating New York Harbor with at least a billion oysters to what they’ve accomplished with the help of thousands of NYC students
  • virtual tour of the Billion Oyster Project Hatchery at New York Harbor School, a maritime high-school located on Governors Island where the Billion Oyster Project is headquartered
  • The Billion Oyster Project volunteer program around building wire mesh oyster cages, which act as artificial reefs for the oysters

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Tatiana, Robina, Helene, and Kathryn — any and all questions about oysters or getting involved with BOP are welcomed and encouraged!

See you there, virtually! $10.
