Book Event: “Reuben Radding: Heavenly Arms”

Join us in the ICP library for a conversation celebrating artist Reuben Radding’s debut photobook, Heavenly Arms. Joining Radding as moderator will be New York City street photographer Melissa O’Shaughnessy, whose debut monograph, Perfect Strangers, was published by Aperture in 2020. Her work appears in We Are Here: Scenes from the Streets, currently on view at ICP. Following the discussion, the pair will be signing their books in ICP’s shop.

About the Book

Distilled from ten years of Reuben Radding’s photography from New York City’s streets and beyond, Heavenly Arms, published by Red Hook Editions, is a meditation on human interconnectedness, conflict, and and the musicality of American life. The 63 black & white photographs within create a poetic world of subjective questions, leading inevitably back to the viewer’s own internal memories, associations, and desires. Heavenly Arms is Reuben Radding’s first photo book.

Reuben Radding is a photographer, writer, musician and teacher based in New York City. His work has appeared in many galleries around the United States and Europe, and also in numerous outlets such as The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and the New Republic. His prolific output has been channeled into a series of 14 limited edition photo zines (so far) that he continues to self-publish. He teaches private photography workshops online year-round, and is currently on faculty in ICP’s One-Year Certificate Program in Creative Practices. Radding received his MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College in 2019.

Melissa O’Shaughnessy was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1960 and attended Georgetown University and the University of St. Thomas, graduating with a degree in journalism. She now a photographer based in New York City. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including a solo show at the Municipal Art Society in New York and a group exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York. Her work is included in the anthologies “Bystander: A History of Street Photography”, “Women Street Photographers”, and “Reclaim the Street: Street Photography’s Moment”. Her first monograph, “Perfect Strangers: New York City Street Photographs” was published by Aperture in 2020.
