Book Launch – “Frackopoly: The Battle for the Future of Energy and the Environment”

“Monopoly” was once the dirty word in America — until enough alarm and advocacy built to bring about Congress’ passing the Sherman Antitrust Act. For many today, “Frackopoly” is becoming the dirty word. And passion and pressure are building to bring about an end to fracking. Ethical’s Environmental Stewardship Committee co-chair Vince Brancato reminds us that Food & Water Watch is a strong and internationally active force trying to protect the environment by focusing on healthy food and clean water for all. Ethical Culture is pleased to cosponsor the book launch, which features a panel presentation headed by author Wenonah Hauter, and executive director of Food & Water Watch (FWW),and moderated by Sandra Steingraber, ecologist, author, and co-founder of New Yorkers Against Fracking.

“A true tale of corruption and greed, Frackopoly: The Battle for the Future of Energy and the Environment exposes how more than 100 years of political influence peddling facilitated the control of our energy system by a handful of corporations and financial institutions.” The book includes an anatomy of the industry and how we can stop its dangerous, widespread practices. It also chronicles the political power generated by an exciting grassroots movement that is fighting to ban fracking, keep fossil fuels in the ground, and help take back our democracy.”

Wenonah Hauter was director of the Public Citizen’s Energy and Environment Program, as well as Environmental Policy Director for Citizen Action, and a senior organizer for the Union of Concerned Scientists. She worked for years with Ralph Nader on the Critical Mass Energy Project.

The panel will also feature John Fenton, a farmer and rancher whose community in Wyoming was devastated by fracking, and Dianne Thomas, a leading activist in Carson, California in the fight to keep 200 new frackable wells out of this Los Angeles County community.

Food & Water Watch has been a leader in the movement to ban fracking in New York and around the country. The organization, along with more than 300 co-sponsoring organizations, is currently planning the March for a Clean Energy Revolution to take place in Philadelphia on the eve of the Democratic National Convention, July 24..
